Saba Island Council and Electoral Council Discuss Election Process Improvements and Collaboration

Representatives from the Electoral Support Team of the Netherlands met with Island Council Members Elsa Peterson, Saskia Matthew, Vito Charles, and Rolando Wilson, along with Island Registrar Akilah Levenstone, to discuss ways to strengthen coordination and improve the 2027 election process on Saba.
The meeting focused on new election tools, updated legal frameworks, and enhancing collaboration among key stakeholders. Recent and upcoming legislative changes introduce additional post-election checks, expanded oversight, and a stronger emphasis on shared accountability between electoral authorities, the Census Office, political parties, and the Island Council.
A clear election timeline was outlined, explaining that while preliminary results may be released shortly after Election Day, final validated results will follow a formal review period, including the investigation of any complaints or irregularities.
To support a smooth election process, several practical tools will be introduced, including:
- A comprehensive election toolkit for officials
- Structured binders for political parties
- Step-by-step guides for registration and candidate submission
- Instruction manuals for the Census Office
A key priority identified during the meeting is accessibility. Local representatives mentioned the importance of providing all election materials in English. In response, the Electoral Support Team confirmed that essential documents will be translated, with registration materials expected by June and candidate submission materials by November.
The introduction of an optional election software was also discussed. The system aims to reduce errors in candidate registration and improve data validation, with potential future development into a centralized web-based platform.
Island Council Members also pointed out the importance of transparency and clear public communication, particularly regarding the distinction between preliminary and final results, and the rights of citizens to report concerns or request investigations.
Outreach efforts to political parties will be organized in the coming months to ensure all participants are well-informed about the updated processes and requirements.
